Tongue-ties & lip-ties.

A physical condition that limits the use of the tongue is called a tongue-tie. This restriction often causes a range of issues and affects around 20% of the population. A lip-tie, on the other hand, is a condition where the upper lip is restricted and cannot move normally. It can cause difficulty with nursing, make it harder to brush the top teeth and can also lead to a gap in the teeth.

The tongue and lip are made up of a very complex group of muscles and are important for all oral functions. For this reason, having a tongue- or lip-tie can lead to nursing, feeding, dental, speech, sleep, or breathing problems. Problems can even persist into adulthood with sleep issues, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, poor posture and speech problems.

A hidden problem.

Although often overlooked, tongue- and lip-ties can be an underlying cause of feeding struggles that affect a child’s weight gain and lead many mothers to stop breastfeeding.

Why do we recommend a frenectomy for lip or tongue ties in kids?

01

EAT BETTER.

Babies nurse and bottle-feed easier and stay satisfied longer. Mom’s also report less pain with nursing. Older children tend to have less food aversions and less digestive concerns.

02

SLEEP BETTER.

Infants and children often sleep more soundly as they can breathe through their noses, which can also improve behavior throughout the day.

03

SPEAK BETTER.

Small children, who are just learning to speak, often form their first words with less difficulty. Older children have the ability to better articulate and speak with more clarity due to increased tongue mobility.

How a frenectomy works.

After listening to your concerns and conducting a comprehensive assessment, we’ll help you get to the root cause of the issues you or your child are experiencing. If a tongue- or lip-tie is the culprit, we will schedule a release using a high tech CO2 laser. This technique is quick and does not require the use of sedation or general anesthesia.

Release.

Using a state-of-the-art CO2 laser, you will have clean margins, decreased soreness, and minimal to no bleeding.

Recover.

You will have minimal downtime for adults and kids, and babies are able to nurse immediately following the procedure.

Re-check.

Post-op exercises are given to achieve optimal results. Follow-up care and access to your myofunctional therapist will be available as you move through the healing process.
